What is Paratransit?

The Union County Paratransit System provides specialized transportation services for elderly (60 and over), permanently disabled and economically disadvantaged residents of Union County.

Paratransit will provide non-emergency transportation to:

Medical Employment
Mental Health Education
Dental Recreation
Hospital Shopping
Clinics Nutrition sites
Access to public transportation  


Days and Hours of Operation

Service is no-fee, by appointment.  Pickup is curb-to-curb unless assistance is requested at the time of reservation.  The union County Paratransit System operates Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.  Evening and Saturday transportation is available by special appointment.

Trip Reservations

Union County Paratransit accepts requests for trips Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Please call at least three (3) business days in advance to request your ride.

Make you pickup and return appointments between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Please be on-time to meet the vehicle at your designated time and place.  The driver will not wait longer than 5 minutes, unless you have designated the dispatcher to instruct the driver to do otherwise.

Please provide the following information when you request a trip for the first time:

bulletName, Address and Telephone Number
bulletDate of Birth
bulletSocial Security Number
bulletMedicaid Number (if applicable)
bulletIncome Level
bulletDisability or Special Need
bulletSpecial Equipment (wheelchair, etc..)

When requesting a trip, please also provide the following information:

bulletDay, Date and Time of the Appointment
bulletCity, State, Address and Phone Number
bulletApproximate Time of Return

Passenger Responsibilities

bulletYou must wear your safety belt at all times.
bulletNo smoking, eating or drinking is permitted on the vehicle.
bulletYou must be ready at least 15 minutes before your scheduled pickup time.
bulletPlease wait at least 15 minutes after your scheduled pickup time before calling the reservationist.

Trip Cancellations

If you must cancel your trip, please try to call at least 2 hours before your scheduled pickup time.  If you must call after business hours, please leave your name, telephone number and scheduled trip information on the answering machine.

Please remember three or more non-cancelled appointments (no-shows) within a 30-day period will result in a suspension of your transportation privileges for a period of 14 days.

Group and Evening Trips Saturdays, Special Requests

Services are provided for group, evening and Saturday transportation by special arrangement with the County's Administrative Offices.  Please call (908) 659-5000.  A per-hour donation is required for this type of transportation.

Who is eligible to use Paratransit?

The Union County Paratransit System provides services to:

bulletSenior citizens 60 years of age and older;
bulletPersons with both temporary and permanent disabilities
bulletthe economically disadvantages; and
bulletMedicaid-eligilble persons going to or from medical facilities.

Donations

The Union County Paratransit System provides free service to all Union County residents.  There is no fare.

Voluntary monetary contributions are accepted, and help to support continuation of this transportation service.  Donation envelopes are available upon request on all paratransit vehicles.  Cash and checks are accepted.  Please make checks out to "Union County Paratransit System."  We are located at:
