What Is MAPS?

MAPS is a special transportation service in Morris County for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.  It is run by the Morris County Division of Transportation Management. MAPS uses small buses, vans and station wagons to provide transportation to medical facilities, education or employment sites, adult day care centers and other locations.  Many MAPS vehicles are specially equipped for persons who use wheelchairs.

Who can use MAPS?

You can use MAPS if you are a Morris County resident AND:

bullet

You are age 60 or older

OR

bullet

You have a physical or mental disability that includes functional limitations.

Priority will be given to persons who have no alternate means of transportation.  MAPS is not intended to replace service provided by individual towns, other agency programs, NJ Transit or Morris Metro.  Many of these services also have specially equipped vehicles to accommodate persons using wheelchairs.  Call the MAPS Main Office at 829-8103 for information on these services.

As schedules permit, MAPS may also provide transportation for persons temporarily disabled by illness or injury.

Where can I go on MAPS?

In general, MAPS trips will be within Morris County.  Some limited travel out of the county may be provided depending upon the schedule and the requested destination.

What kind of trips can I make on MAPS?

In general, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and dialysis will be the highest priority trip purposes.  Trips to work, to school, to adult day care and to medical appointments will also have a high priority.  Depending upon the region, you can also use MAPS to travel to nutrition program sites, for food shopping, to visit friends or relatives, and for other social activities, as schedules permit.

How do I get a ride on MAPS?

Under the MAPS system, Morris County has been divided into four service regions.  Use the map below to determine what region your town is in.  Use the list on Page 5 to find the name and telephone number of the transportation provider for your region.  The list also tells you the hours of service for your region.  Call your provider to arrange transportation during the "Call-In Times" listed.  If you have a question about which region you are in, call the MAPS Main Office at 829-8103.

What days does MAPS operate?

All MAPS regions operate regular transportation service during daytime hours from Monday through Friday.  Use the list on Page 5 to find out what hours of service are available for your region.  The hours of service may vary depending upon which region you live in.  If you have a question bout the service hours for you region, call the provider for your region or call the MAPS Main Office at 829-8103.

Can I make trips during evenings or weekends?

MAPS will try to arrange transportation for groups that would like to travel to an event during the evening or on the weekend, depending upon the schedule and the destination.  Under special circumstances MAPS will try to arrange evening or weekend transportation for individuals going to a special event.  Call Sophie Dyer at 366-9378 to make arrangements.

Do I need to make reservations in advance for my MAPS trip?

YES! For regular, daytime MAPS trips you must call the provider for your region at least 48 hours in advance to arrange MAPS transportation.  You should call as soon as you know your appointment because demand is heavy for MAPS service and the schedule fills quickly. Be sure to let your transportation provider know if you use a wheelchair or scooter or if you will be traveling with an attendant, escort or guide dog.

For evening or weekend trips, you must call at least two weeks in advance to make arrangements.  You should call as soon as you know your schedule.  Only a limited amount of evening and weekend service is available, but we will do our best to serve you.  Contact Patricia Rogalsky at 366-9378 to make arrangements for these trips.

How much does a trip on MAPS cost?

Much of the money for MAPS is provided by New Jersey Casino Tax Revenue funds and by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders.  However, MAPS also needs contributions from its passengers to help pay the cost of providing service.  In 1999, it cost about $28.00 to provide each round trip on MAPS.

We have provided the following suggested donation scale.  You may give more or less if you so desire.  You will not be refused service if you cannot make a donation, but all contributions are gratefully appreciated.

For transportation to sheltered workshops, we suggest:

bullet

$1.00 per round trip or $20.00 per month.

For transportation to other employment, we suggest:

bullet

$2.00 per round trip or $40.00 per month

For all other trips, we suggest:

bullet

$1.00 per round trip

For evening or weekend service, we suggest:

bullet

$3.00 per round trip for travel within Morris County

bullet

$5.00 per round trip for travel outside Morris County

Please ask the provider in your region for information on how to make a contribution.  Your generosity will help insure continuation of MAPS service.

If you have any questions about the information in this brochure, or need to know more about ho MAPS works, you can call the provider for your region or else contact the MAPS Main Office at 829-8103.
