Bergen County Special Transportation Mission Statement

Bergen County Special Transportation is a division of the Department of Human Services.

The Division of Special Transportation is here to provide a safe, trouble free, scheduled transportation system for disabled, elderly, and frail residents of Bergen County.

Service is provided in a professional, timely, courteous, and caring manner in all type of weather.  Service is door-to-door and is provided by drivers who are specially trained to assist the elderly and persons with disabilities.

This vital service is life sustaining for clients with serious medical and health needs; a lifeline to homebound clients who are delivered nutritional meals daily; and a link to social services for clients who would otherwise be isolated and alone.

Current services include;

bullet

routine medical visits

bullet

meals on wheels

bullet

community outreach/activity center

bullet

driving people to their places of employment

bullet

recreational activities

bullet

shopping

bullet

education

bullet

post stroke

The goals of the Division of Special Transportation are to increase the number of clients served, to expand service to night hours for recreational, educational, and medical purposes and to remain a national model for special transportation services.

Special Transportation: Know Priorities Phone Early

The Bergen County Office of Special Transportation provides transportation for use by elderly and disabled persons who are unable to use public transportation.

The service is heavily used and the needs are ever increasing.  Every effort is made to accommodate everyone who needs the special transportation facilities.  The highest priority is given to medical appointments, day care, transportation to work and grocery shopping.  Transportation is also available to nutrition sites, senior citizen centers and recreational activities.

It is important to make reservations as early as possible.  Clients are urged to call as soon as they have a medical appointment for which they need transportation.  It is also important that dispatchers be make aware of the need for a wheelchair lift or of any problem a client may have getting on and off a van.

Transportation is not available on the following holidays:

New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Policies Regarding Service

The safety of those who use special transportation is very important.  In that spirit, there are a few policies to clarify regarding the use of special transportation services:

bullet

The driver may assist you up and down the steps of th vehicle and to and from your seat;

bullet

The driver is not permitted to enter anyone's home;

bullet

The driver is not permitted to take a client in a wheelchair down stairs.

We hope you understand our concerns, and we thank you for your cooperation.

Share the Cost if you Can

Your donations help to improve services.  Special transportation is extremely expensive to provide.  The average cost for a round-trip is $10.  If you are able to contribute toward the cost, we suggest a donation of $1.

Contributions are used to purchase additional vans.

Phone the Office of Special Transportation at (201) 646-3137.

How to use the following index

On the following section you will find a list of Bergen County's municipalities, each followed by a series of numbers.  The numbers correspond to transportation services provided to the elderly and disabled of that community.  The list of the transportation services  follows the list of municipalities.

1. Locate the town in which you live

2. Click on the first number following your town and read the description to see if it meets your needs.

3. If the first number does not apply, refer to the other columns.

Municipalities offer various types of transportation exclusively for their residents (i.e., in town only, door-to-door and set routes).  Some of this information is not available to us but we have included as much as we were able to get.  Disabled and elderly clients should contact their municipal buildings to inquire further about available transportation.

We hope you find this information helpful and invite you to inform us of any other transportation resources of which you are aware.

The information contained in this chart represents data collected at the time of publishing.  Since these sources may be increased or reduced without notice, it is possible that there may be changes from the date of publication to the date you refer to this information.  Periodic updates will be made to keep this information as current as possible.
