New Jersey Transit

As the state’s public transit provider, NJ TRANSIT is dedicated to providing accessible transportation services to people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990  ensures that standards of accessibility be incorporated into all of NJ TRANSIT’s services.

Whether your travel needs are to take you to work, school or recreational activities, NJ TRANSIT offers an accessible "Way to Go." Below lists the options available through NJ TRANSITS’s Accessible Services program.

LIFT-EQUIPPED BUSES AND RESERVE-A-LIFT SERVICE

Buses with lifts are the focal point of our commitment to an accessible bus fleet. Persons who use any type of mobility device or have difficulty using steps may board a bus using a lift.

Lift-equipped buses have the international symbol of accessibility.

Local routes have scheduled runs with lift-equipped buses, noted with a "W" next to them, at the time indicated on the timetable.

Commuter routes require a reservation in advance for a lift-equipped bus. Reservations need to be made for specific times at specific stops.

To reserve –a-lift equipped bus or to cancel a reservation, call the Transit Information Center by 4 p.m. the day before you wish to travel.

Priority Seating areas are designated.  Bus Operators are required to announce bus route numbers, destinations, major stops, and stops requested by passengers. Buses have large destination signs.

KNEELING BUSES

For people who have difficulty negotiating the first step of a bus, ask the driver to operate the "kneeling" bus feature.

Look for the kneeling bus decal, located by the front door of the bus.

Steps are lowered several inches for easier access.

CONTRACT AND PRIVATE BUS CARRIERS

Passengers must call the Contract Carriers directly for lift-equipped information and reservations. Check schedules for phone numbers or call the Transit Information Center.

Most Private Carriers participate in the Reduced Fare program.

ACCESSIBLE RAIL SERVICES

NJ TRANSIT presently has 44 rail stations that are accessible by elevator, access ramp, mini high-level platform or portable life. Call the Transit Information Center or consult a system map for accessible rail station information.

Passengers using a mobility device need to inform a member of the train crew of their destination to ensure that the train will arrive at an accessible platform.

Priority Seating areas are designated.

Bridge Plates bridge the gap between the train and platform, and are installed at all accessible high-level and mini high-level platforms.

 ACCESS LINK ADA PARATRANSIT

Access Link is a full-fare, curb-to-curb transportation service provided to conform to the ADA Paratransit requirements.

Access Link is specifically for people whose disabilities prevent them from using NJ TRANSIT local bus service. All persons wishing to use Access Link must apply for eligibility.

Access Link service operates during the same days and hours as NJ TRANSIT local fixed route bus service and has a 20-minute pick-up window.

An Access Link eligible trip (origin and destination) must fall within ¾ of a mile of a local bus route.

Call Access Link for more information at 800-955-2321, TT- 800-955-6765.

REDUCED FARE

People with disabilities and Senior Citizens (62 years and older) can ride on NJ TRANSIT buses and trains (excluding Access Link) for a reduced fare during off-peak hours. This saves you at least 50% off the regular one-way fare!

Off-Peak means weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.; all day Saturday, Sundays and holidays.

Show a Medicare Card or NJT Reduced Fare Card.

Most Private Carriers participate in the Reduced Fare Program.

For applications and more information, please call 973-378-6401 between 8:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.

WHEELS

The WHEELS program provides a variety of minibus transit services addressing the needs of the local communities.

All WHEELS minibuses are lift-equipped.

WHEELS services in Phillipsburg and Hackettstown will "flex" off route to accommodate passenger needs. Call Transit Information Center or the Contractor for more information.

COUNTY PARATRANSIT

Each of the 21 counties in New Jersey provides county-based paratransit service for people with disabilities and Senior Citizens. Please call 973-491-7372 for information about your local county paratransit service.
